Property owners rely on door locks as one of their main lines of defence against intruders. However, with so many options available to criminals including drilling, picking and bumping it is certainly worth considering the use of a restricted keying system with built-in safeguards against these unwanted access techniques.

Drilling a lock is usually used as a last resort by a locksmith, when all other means of unlocking it have been exhausted. However, criminals are also able to use this technique to completely destroy a lock and gain access to a property.

Lock picking is the art of unlocking a lock by manipulating the components of the lock device without the original key. Although lock picking can be associated with criminal intent, it is also an essential skill for Locksmiths

Aside from drilling and picking which can be used for legitimate purposes, there is a technique favoured almost entirely by criminals called lock bumping. Lock bumping is a very powerful technique that can very quickly open cylinder locks and deadbolt locks by using a specially designed key called a bump key, which has the same keyway as the lock it is opening. Perhaps the most concerning thing about lock bumping is that anyone with access to the internet can watch ‘how-to’ videos which demonstrate how to make and use bump keys to gain access to a property in less than 10 seconds!

The great news is that the Schlage SR restricted keying system offers end users and building owners a locksmith grade, high precision restricted keying system which is resistant to drilling, picking and bumping techniques. This is achieved both through the materials used to build the lock, and also additional security features within the device itself such as the use of pick guards.

Schlage also offers a Master Key design service for the Schlage SR Keying system, which is designed to suit the most common Australasian type barrel profiles. High quality nickel silver keys are used for the superior key strength and reliability which the Schlage brand is renowned for, and a restricted design provides patent protection for Schlage SR keys for the next two decades. Schlage SR keys are identifiable as SR1, SR2, SR3 and 18 different coloured identification studs can be attached to the bow of the key.
